Army Drill Sergeant Divorces
Why Drill Sergeants Have the Highest Divorce Rates of Any Army Position
Fort Benning, GA Lawyer Mark Jones Discusses the Army Divorce Rate
One of the questions Columbus GA Divorce Attorney Mark Jones is often asked is, “what is the military divorce rate?” The military divorce rate is at its highest since 1999. The United States Army is the branch of military service with the second highest divorce rate, with Army troops reporting a rate of 3.7%, the Air Force being the highest with 3.9%.
In Lawyer Mark Jones‘ experience the military divorce rate is highest among drill sergeants — disproportionately so — compared to other infantry and to officers. In fact, studies confirm that the military divorce rate is overall is significantly higher than the general population, particularly after a deployment.
In fact, one study states that the military divorce rate after 9/11 was 28% more likely if the soldier-spouse was deployed. This is because, “we’re … putting more families together who haven’t been used to being together.”
It makes one wonder why we are deploying our soldiers in seemingly futile wars.
The disproportionate rate of drill sergeants getting divorced most likely has to do with the increased demands for work and performance among drill sergeants. They don’t necessarily work 9-5. They work extremely long hours. Drill Sergeants are hand-picked by the army due to their skill, often having been deployed many times prior to being selected.
They have a profound impact on the recruits that they whip into shape — many recruits never forget the drill sergeant that trained them, shaped them, and indoctrinated them into the military lifestyle. It’s not unlike a law professor. To this day, I will never forget Professor Dan Coenen, who was like a drill sergeant to a me in law school. Impossible to please with extremely high standards, Professor Coenen whipped students under his care into lawyers.
So, with increasing demands on our military, drill sergeants get our troops into shape, but the problem is, they oftentimes lose their family in the process to a divorce. These soldiers have a high sense of duty, and they put their country first.
